In the heart of downtown Shanghai stands the famous Grosvenor House apartment building that today lies within the Jin Jiang Hotel complex, a green swathe of gardens and buildings that effectively protects residents from the hustle and bustle of the streets outside. It is in this prestigious complex that advertising director Melvin Chua has set up home, creating an ultra modern living space within art deco surrounds. Chua, who recently moved to the city, is representative of the new breed of Shanghai dwellers: cosmopolitan urbanites who are adding a creative buzz to life in the modern Chinese city His spacious interior is filled with a clever mix of streamlined furniture, antique Chinese pieces and colourful, modern Chinese art. Chua commissioned interior designer Robert Chan (formerly London-based, now living in Shanghai) of Nube to help him create the sophisticated space.

Keeping doors and interior walls to a minimum allows each room to flow effortlessly into the next and enhances the sense of space. Clean lines and luxurious textures are key, evident in the custom-made modern cream sofas, leather armchairs and the Ming-style furniture sourced from Shanghai's famous flea markets. The retro-inspired, somewhat sombre palette of brown, white and cream is lifted by vibrant Chinese artworks by prominent Shanghai and Beijing artists.
